About International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB).
Sir Hans Adolf Krebs, a British biochemist of German ancestry, was the driving force behind the first Congress of Biochemistry, which was held in 1949 at Cambridge, UK, and was intended to bring together biochemists who had been prevented from cooperating by World War II. At the time, the field of biochemistry was expanding, and it was vying for inclusion as a Union within the International Council for Science (ISC).
The Congress was a crucial first step in establishing biochemistry as a distinct field and organization. The International Committee of Biochemistry was established during the congress' final session, consisting of 20 members from 14 different nations, with the intention of obtaining from the ISC "recognition as the international body representative of biochemistry, with a view to the formal constitution.
After several more years of discussions, the International Union of Biochemistry (IUB) was established and accepted to the ISC by the third Congress of Biochemistry, which was held in Brussels in 1955. (formally ICSU). IUB became the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1991. (IUBMB).
