Outstanding candidates from outside the UK are given 80 full-fee scholarships each year by Gates Cambridge to pursue a postgraduate degree in any field offered by the University of Cambridge. There will be about 25 awards available in the US round and 55 awards available in the international round, with about two-thirds of these awards going to PhD candidates.

The complete cost of attending Cambridge University is covered by a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Additionally, it offers discretionary money that is additional.

- The required amount of the university composition fee
- a maintenance allowance (£18,744 for 12 months at the rate of 2022–23; pro rata for courses lasting less than 12 months) for a single student; for PhD students, the award is for up to 4 years.
- one round-trip flight in economy in both directions, the cost of the immigration health surcharge and any inbound visa fees.
The University Composition Fee varies depending on the type of student; for complete information on exact amounts, applicants may see the Graduate Studies prospectus.The Trust will not cover these costs if a student has been successful in receiving a fee award from public agencies (such the UKRI).
Distinctive elements
The Trust also makes discretionary decisions on requests for a range of extra funding, including:
- Depending on the length of your programme, you may be eligible for academic development grants ranging from £500 to £2,000 to help you attend conferences and courses.
- Family allowance: £10,944 for one child; £15,612 for two or more children (2022-23 rate). A partner is not given any funding.
- Fieldwork - As part of your PhD, you can apply to keep up to your regular maintenance allowance while on the field (the Trust does not fund other fieldwork costs as these should be funded by the University Composition Fee).
- If you need financing for maternity or paternity leave, you can seek to put your studies on hold for up to six months while still receiving your maintenance allowance.
- Hardship money is available to help students who face unforeseen challenges.
Qualifications for the University of Cambridge Gates Cambridge Scholarship
You can only apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are;
- A national of any nation other than the United Kingdom
- Applying to study in one of the following programs at Cambridge University:
1. PhD, either full- or part-time
2. MLitt (full-time)
3. One year of full-time postgraduate study, with few exceptions
