Scholarship for International Students, the World in Serbia 2022–2023

In order to encourage students from Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) nations, such as South Africa, to pursue higher education, the Government of the Republic of Serbia is providing scholarships for bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees during the academic year 2022–2023.

Aim and benefits of  the World in Serbia Scholarship.

The following are covered under the World in Serbia scholarship:
  • Free preparatory Serbian language instruction (online Serbian course and intensive Serbian language instruction upon arrival in the Republic of Serbia);
  • Tuition for basic academic or vocational courses, specialized studies in the arts or sciences, master's degrees, or doctoral degrees;
  • Stipend of 15.000,00 Serbian dinars per month, or roughly R 2165.01;
  • Housing and food costs for students;
  • Mandatory health coverage (up to age 26); a residence permit; and
  • Free verification of secondary and higher education.
The Department will assist successful recipients with their settlement expenses as well as their travel expenses to and from Serbia.

Qualifications for The World in Serbia Scholarship


1. Only citizen of a NAM observer or member state;
  • Must be proposed by the Department of Higher Education and Training of the South African Government;
2. You must be younger than:
  • 21 for first-degree studies, including Bachelor's in both academic and vocational fields;
  • 25 for first-degree specialist vocational studies and second-degree specialist academic studies, including master's degree academic, master's degree vocational, and specialized academic studies;
  • 35 for doctoral academic studies, the third degree.
3. Candidates must possess:
  • Four years of academic or professional courses for a bachelor's program;
4. Scholarly research amounting to:
  • 60 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits are required to enroll in a master's degree, along with a valid diploma from an institution of higher education that has at least 240 ECTS credits;
  • To enroll in a Master's program, you must have 120 ECTS credits and a valid certificate from an institution of higher education with at least 180 ECTS credits.
  • To enroll in a doctoral program, you must have the proper diploma from a higher education institution, obtained during master's academic or integrated academic studies with a minimum of 300 ECTS credits.
  • A valid certificate from an institution of higher learning with at least 180 ECTS credits to enroll in a Master's or Specialist occupational program;
5. Either English or Serbian must be well-spoken;
  •  All applicants must be in excellent health and present an HIV-negative test result and a medical certificate that is no older than six months stating that they have not developed an infectious or contagious condition.

How to Apply

Application materials must be submitted to Internationalscholarships@dhet.gov.za together with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development Application form and any other supporting documentation.

Documents listed below must be submitted by applicants:
  • An application in its entirety with two chosen study programs
  • A resume and an inspirational letter;
  • Certified passport copy;
  • Certified copies of each certificate of post-secondary education;
  • Certified copy of all academic records from after-school;
  • A certificate of language competency in Serbian or English;
  • A recent (within the past six months) medical certificate attesting to your lack of an infectious or contagious ailment; and
  • A negative result for HIV
All submitted documents must be legible and in PDF format (no photographs of documents will be accepted).

Note: Scholarship holders will not be allowed to change the study program once they have passed the entrance exam and been admitted to a certain program.
