University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarship program Ontario (OGS)/Queen Elizabeth II in Science and Technology 2023 (QEII-GSST)

   The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) and Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) programs support graduate study excellence at publicly supported universities in Ontario. The Ontario government and partner institutions jointly fund both initiatives. The amount of the rewards is split evenly between the government and the university, with the remaining one-third coming from the university.

One application is used for consideration for both OGS and QEII-GSST at Waterloo. Both awards are equally prestigious. Tri-agency award applicants are NOT automatically given consideration for OGS and QEII-GSST; instead, they must submit a separate OGS/QEII-GSST application form. The following are the distinctions between OGS and QEII-GSST scholarships:

  • OGS is a merit-based scholarship program open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international students for graduate study in all academic fields.
  • Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for the QEII-GSST, a merit-based scholarship program aimed at students in research-based graduate programs in one of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines.

Before monies are disbursed to successful OGS International beneficiaries who are living outside of Canada as a result of COVID-19, they must provide documentation of an active study permit or a study permit application that is still pending.

  • Competition within Canada: Candidates must, as of the application deadline, be Canadian citizens, Permanent Residents, or Protected Persons as defined in section 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada);

Minimum Academic Standards

  • A first-class average (minimum A-/80%) in each of the last two completed academic years is required of applicants (full-time equivalent).

 Admission/Registration Status

  • Competition from abroad: Due to the restricted number of grants available for overseas students, applications will only be considered from students who will be enrolled in a graduate program by at least the autumn 2021 term (or on an allowed inactive term from their graduate program). International UW undergraduate students currently enrolled are not eligible to apply.
  • Domestic competition: To be eligible for acceptance into the spring 2022, fall 2022, or winter 2023 terms, applicants must either be presently enrolled in a graduate program or have submitted an application for admission to one by the February 1, 2022 deadline.
