The African Studies Center is aware that there are few options for foreign African students attending Michigan State University (MSU) to apply for scholarships and fellowships to undertake research in Africa, which are typically given to US citizens and permanent residents.
The honor is given to the politician and academic Nnamdi Azikiwe, who served as the first civilian president of Nigeria and requested MSU faculty to help him and other Nigerians establish a land-grant model university in Eastern Nigeria. It then changed its name to the University of Nigeria at Nsukka, which had an illustrious educational past and served as the foundation for the MSU African Studies faculty, which currently numbers about 100 academics from several colleges and departments.

Aims Benefits of the MSU Nnamdi Azikiwe International African Student Fellowship and its advantages
- One or more fellowships worth up to $2,000 each will be given out to cover fieldwork and/or travel costs in Africa. Students must raise additional funds if their expenses exceed the amount of the award because the money is only intended to cover costs.
Qualification/Requirement for the MSU Nnamdi Azikiwe International African Student Fellowship
- This fellowship is only available to African undergraduate or graduate students who are pursuing research in Africa.
- A degree-granting program at MSU is required for applicants, and award recipients are required to enroll at MSU again the semester after receiving their prize.
- Students who have a strong academic record and can show a need for financial assistance will be given preference.
- A satisfactory completion of any MSU prerequisites for conducting research abroad is a requirement for admission (IRB training for instance).
- Within one month after their return from Africa, fellowship winners are required to prepare and submit a report (three to five pages long) to the African Studies Center.
